Tanah Gajah, a Resort by Hadiprana

Moored amid rice paddies in the uplands of Bali, and a destination unto itself, the 20-key property is spread out over a lush six hectares of land. With roots that go back to legendary designer and art collector, Hendra Hadiprana, the property has long attracted art and design lovers. It was originally built in the 1980s as a holiday home for Hadiprana and his family and was transformed into a resort in 2004. Though the Hadiprana family relinquished its occupancy of the site as a private family compound, the patriarch’s art collection remained, and numerous sculptures, antiques, and artwork from his travels can be found throughout the property to this day. Each villa is assigned a personal butler and guests enjoy extensive complimentary Club Benefits such as an a la carte breakfast, daily afternoon tea, evening cocktails, minibar including alcohol, laundry service, and more. Unique activities include rice paddy trekking, the acclaimed Kecak & Fire Dance followed by a Royal Balinese dinner at The Tempayan Restaurant. Family friendly activities also include fishing, swan feeding, kites flying or a ride on Bali's only hot air balloon experience. The property features elegant gardens and smooth pathways on flat surface, which are safe and comfortable for guests of all ages to explore during their stay.

Hendra Hadiprana, who founded the property (and passed on in 2018), was a huge supporter of the arts. His heirs launched Tanah Gajah Ubud as a way to further his legacy and his commitment to the art and culture of Indonesia, while fostering sustainable relationships with nearby communities. The Balinese Kecak Fire Dance performance supports a local village and has done so for generations. Many of the performers are the grandchildren of the original performers that performed on the property when it was a private estate. Tanah Gajah Ubud has a strong farm-to-table, organic gardening approach. Chef Dean has cultivated an expansive garden with a rich array of herbs from kitchen staples to some new contenders: tarragon, garlic chives, oregano, marjoram, lemon balm, cinnamon basil, Vietnamese coriander, turmeric; and vegetables from okra to eggplants; along with fruits ranging from limes to durian. Most produce commutes less than 50 yards. Tanah Gajah also owns part of the rice paddy fields. The property collaborates with local farmers from the neighboring village to cultivate the rice. Upon harvesting season, Tanah Gajah split the crops with the farmers and the resort's share is used in the restaurants. Other ingredients are sourced from local farmers or those within Indonesia in order to cut the resort’s carbon footprints.
